A real CF branch election is taking place. People know about it and candidates are making public statements about it. Bristol & Gloucestershire deserve a round of applause, the candidates are making the most of democracy and seem to be enjoying themselves whilst taking part.
Laura-Rose Saunders and James Skinner are battling it out for Area Chair'. Laura has turned her blog into a campaign tool with video and text statements, while James has released a statement via Facebook listing campaigns he wants the branch to take on:
1. POST OFFICE CAMPAIGN
CF to support the Bristol Conservatives to strengthen local support for the vital Post Office services across Bristol and South Gloucestershire. Focus on a constituency-wide door-to-door petition. Constituents encouraged to regularly use their local Post Office branches to illustrate that society simply cannot manage without them.
2. KNIFE CRIME AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
CF to help local MPs and PPCs to tackle the growing social issue of knife crime, particularly prevalent amongst youngsters in Britain's modern society. This would be achieved through focused CF campaigns in urban communities to increase awareness to the terrible and tragic consequences of knife crime. Close work with schools and youth groups the key to getting our message across to youngsters.
3. SOCIAL ACTION IN LOCAL SCHOOLS & COMMUNITIES
The standard of education in parts of Bristol has been criticised and CF would look to get involved with projects whereby a difference to the welfare of some of Bristol's most deprived communities would be achieved. Assistance to be given to schools to help maintain or improve facilities and at the same time, to encourage children to make the most from their education.
4. BRISTOL 'CYCLING CITY' CAMPAIGN
CF to support the recent initiative to make Bristol England's first 'Cycling City'. Encouragement for CF members to embrace this scheme by cycling to work or school instead of using their cars. Make CF members aware of the 'Re-Cycling' scheme that repairs bikes and provides them free of charge to deprived communities. Children across the region would also receive cycling training. Whilst being a Government initiative, CF to show cross-party consensus by supporting a scheme which would undoubtedly benefit the City of Bristol and its people.
5. CF INVOLVEMENT WITH LOCAL SPORT
In addition to encouraging people to keep fit by cycling around Bristol as much as possible, CF would establish strong relationships with some of the region's major sporting organisations. Such organisations as Gloucestershire County Cricket Club, Bristol Rugby Club and the two major football clubs, Bristol City and Bristol Rovers, would be a great way for CF to reach out to a larger proportion of society. CF volunteers to also assist with the running of the Bristol City Half Marathon, held every September."
